Here's what you need to know

1. GET PREPARED & CLEAR ON WHAT YOU WANT

Draw out your ideal bathroom layout pretending you have a blank canvas. Do remember that while you want this space to look nice, it needs to be functional and fit for purpose. No feather lampshades! Draw inspiration from online and even take a trip to a bathroom/hardware store, make sure to take pictures.

2. BE REALISTIC WITH BUDGET
Do your homework on cost benchmarks including all fixtures and the types of tradespeople needed. The bathroom is one of the few rooms in the house that every tradesperson is required! Always add a buffer of 10-20% extra onto your budget for unexpected set-backs or additional work needed (good practise for most things in life)

  • A Plumber for the toilet, shower, pipes…
  • An Electrician for all the wires, lights…
  • A Carpenter for the flooring and cabinets…
  • A Tiler for the tiles on the ground or the walls (includes the shower)..
  • A Painter to freshen those walls

3. DON’T GET THE CHEAPEST FIXTURES

You might be tempted to go for the cheapest fittings or tapware. While you save money in the short-term, you will cost yourself in the medium-long term replacements which could in the end cost you more in the end.

4.DON'T FORGET ABOUT STORAGE

You will be surprised at the space that is required in a bathroom especially with a big family. They are penalty of smart additions to use like wall mirrors with hidden cabinet, under skin shelves etc. Save yourself space with wall hanging radiators which are also great for drying towels effectively.

5. DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF LIGHT

If like most homes, the space in bathrooms is precious, ensure there is plenty of light to brighten up the space. consider using frosting on your windows versus a blind to maxmise your light and space. Painting the walls in a bright colour coupled with big mirrors is also a good option.
